Script Synopsis
The Film is title
“Grace” and depicts a young girl who has high aim in life and wants to become a
lawyer. During her pursue she confronted many social and cultural hindrances.
This story represents
the many challenges all Papua New Guinea young girls and women confront in
their lives.
This is a moving
story, which starts in a highland village and takes us all the way to Port
Moresby city where Grace went in search for quality education. She confronts
family violence at home. A home so corrupt that her uncle does not treat his
wife as equal partner. Although Grace stays with a working class man, she lives
a very poor live while striving for quality education.
Many bad things happen
to her. She was attempt rape by her own
guardian. She was traumatised and collapsed while sitting for her final exam
and rushed to the hospital. She cannot live with fear in the same house so she
had to return to her village.
At home a local businessman
who had always set his eyes on Grace has given money and material goods to the
uncle and mother. When Grace is trying to recover from her city depressions, the
man who wants to marry her arranges for a quick public engagement. Grace was forced
into engagement and to meet the businessman. All the uncles and Grace’s mother have
already taken gives from the man. Grace is unaware of this. His father is
unaware but will he have the power and strength to support Grace in this
culture where uncles can rule. Can the father stand up and support her daughter?
Will Grace fulfill her
dream to become a lawyer?
